Leave the first session with something you can return to

Imagine wanting to make a small booklet about objects on your desk. The idea is broad enough to postpone indefinitely. This original fictional planning card narrows the first session to selecting three objects and drafting one caption for each. It is a preparation exercise, not a claim that a finished booklet or a successful routine already exists.

Put the starting material on the card

Write the project idea at the top, then list what is already available: three desk objects, a sheet of paper and a pencil. Add the period you intend to spend, such as twenty minutes, as a chosen boundary rather than a prediction of how quickly everyone should work. Leave printing, binding and page decoration outside this first activity. The card should make it possible to begin with the materials at hand. If something essential is unavailable, revise the activity instead of quietly turning preparation into a larger shopping or research task.

Define the item you want to leave behind

Specify the session’s output in plain terms: a list of three selected objects with one draft caption each. A caption could name an object and describe a visible detail, such as the worn edge of a notebook. It need not summarise the object’s entire history. Make three labelled spaces on the sheet so the intended output is visible before beginning. This creates a useful stopping point. Extra ideas can go in a separate margin, where they remain available without replacing the small task the card was designed to support.

At the end, record what exists, including unfinished captions. Choose a next action that follows from that state: finish the third caption, arrange the three entries on a page or choose a cover title. Avoid marking the booklet complete merely because the first card is filled. Keep the draft sheet with the continuation note so the next session starts from the work rather than from a vague memory of the intention. The card connects available materials, a limited output and an honest handover to the next attempt.
